A Study on Physical Growth, Development and Health Status of Physically Perfect Students of Primary School in an Urban Area

Abstract
A study of 300 (147 boys, 153 girls) physically perfect students from primary school in an urban area was conducted for assessing their physical growth, development and health status during the period of April 1 to April 5, 1971, and the following results were obtained:
1. Physical Growth and Development
a. Maximum growth was observed at the age group of 7 to 11 years, both male and female
b. The maximum annual growth rates were as follow:
Height: boys-5.3cm from 8 to 9 years of age and 5.4cm from 9 to 10
girls-8.1cm from 8 to 9 and 8.3cm from 9 to 10
Weight: boys-6.0kg from 6 to 7 and 5.7kg from 9 to 10
girls-8.1kg from 8 to 9 and 7.6kg from 9 to 10
Chest-girth: boys-6.0cm from 9 to 10 and 4.3cm from 8 to 9
girls-8.0cm from 8 to 9 and 7.3cm from 9 to 10
c. Height, weight, chest-girth and head-girth of physically perfect Korean Students were relatively higher than Japaneses Students group of 6-13 years old, and were much higher than the recent standard growth rate of Korean Students.
d. The greatest dividual differences in growth and development were observed with in the age groups of 8-9 and 9-10 year olds.
e. The Rohrer and Kaup indexes were steadily increasing annually in all age groups.
2. Skifold Thickness
a. The average skinfold thickness measured by a large skinfold caliper was as follows:
At the sub-scapular: boys-from 10.0 to 15.5mm
girls-from 8.0 to 13.7mm in all age groups
Abdominal: boys-10.0 to 15.5
girls-from 8.0 to 15.7mm in all age groups
Lumbar: boys-10.3 to 19.2
girls-8.0 to 18.5mm in all age groups
Upper arm: boys-8.8 to 14.8
girls-8.0 to 14.8mm in all age groups
Total average: boys-9.9 to 15.8
girls-8.4 to 15.2mm in all age groups
In all cases, the measurement of male students were relatively higher than those of the female
b. The average skinfold thickness of physically perfect Korean Students was higher than that of the general students.
3. The Total Rate of Abnormality in Sight Shows as follows:
boys-11.6 per cent in the left sight and 13.0 per cent in the right sight
girls-15.7 per cent in the left sight and 13.2 per cent in the right sight
both sexes-13.6 per cent in the left sight and 13.0 per cent in the right sight
